@bcmills requested issue #61873 to be considered for backport to the next 1.21 minor release.

@gopherbot, please backport to Go 1.21. This is a very confusing failure mode.

I think this is actually a bug in go1.20.7, so it isn't even coherent to backport a fix to Go 1.21. 😅
