@bcmills requested issue #46137 to be considered for backport to the next 1.16 minor release.

@gopherbot, please backport to Go 1.15 and 1.16.

This change should be relatively uninvasive, and will allow users on those releases to more smoothly interoperate with users on Go 1.17.
