How about using RFC documentation instead?

This document is still accessible here:

We might find a better reference, but I don't think we will find this in an RFC, it's more likely to be found in a textbook or similar.

The previous link broke, but I managed to find the same document elsewhere.
It would be good to find a more permanent reference, but this is better than
nothing.

The previous link broke, but I managed to find the same document elsewhere.
It would be good to find a more permanent reference, but this is better than

The new link which points to http://kiosk.nada.kth.se/nada/kurser/kth/2D1441/semteo03/lecturenotes/assump.pdf is also dead.

I'd rather use the WebArchive version. https://web.archive.org/web/20040719170906/https://www.nada.kth.se/kurser/kth/2D1441/semteo03/lecturenotes/assump.pdf
