A real-world example:

symlink'ed in "src/github.com/mattn/" my own "go-gtk" repository
(to avoid changing every include path in the source)

go install -v github.com/mattn/go-gtk/...
or
go install -v github.com/mattn/go-gtk...

gives
warning: "github.com/mattn/go-gtk/..." matched no packages

but e.g.
go install -v github.com/mattn/go-gtk/gtk
works

Comment 2:

I don't expect to fix this. Symlinks are trouble. It is best to just avoid them.

Status changed to Unfortunate.
