The fact that RightAlign sometimes copies but does not always copy makes the API a bit
awkward to use.  Would it be terrible if it always copied?

Comment 1:

But, 99% of the time the data is already aligned and so no copy is needed. That's the
point of the function: it would just be a []byte member if it could be.
