build.FindTree only allows paths in GOPATH (or GOROOT).

But you could have Go files (as scripts) in wahetever path of your system, just like you
have bash scripts around whatever path.

Comment 1:

Again, you can choose not to follow the conventions
that the tools have set and that make them not require
any configuration.
But if you don't follow the convention, the tools don't
work.  That's the tradeoff for not needing to configure
them.  (Otherwise how can they know what the import
path is?)
